Revisiting GTA Vice City | Video Game Memories | Grand Theft Auto Vice City
103When I got my hands on this game it was a truly unique experience for me. Everything felt so different, fresh and unique. I fell in love with this game right from it’s menu screen. The game gave out this whole holiday type feel to it. The way that shape transformed randomly on menu while select between start, options and exit felt oddly satisfying to me visually. Even the load screen felt so awesome. It was a complete delight. And then the game started.
The missions were quite fun to play but there was one mission which was a complete headache. Well, yes, you guessed it right. The RC Helicopter mission. That darn helicopter mission made me fail almost every single time because of the frustrating timer and explosives along with those henchmen shooting at the helicopter. I somehow managed to complete it after long frustrating hours of being bombarded with “Mission Failed” messages.
Only that one mission was frustrating. Otherwise the overall game felt so awesome. My favourite mission from the game is most definitely “Guardian Angels” wherein you protect Diaz from Haitian’s. The overall direction of that mission was really marvellous and chasing those goons on their Sanchez gave an adrenaline rush while playing it. Of course, the mission was a bit difficult but not as frustrating as the RC Helicopter mission.
Also, spoiler alert, the last mission wherein Lance betrays you and you start going all ruthless by spraying bullets all over Diaz mansion felt like a satisfying ending to the game. The mansion looked very similar to Tony Montana’s mansion in Scarface and by the end of the movie Tony dies. I thought that even our character Tommy will die by the end of the mission because so many things were inspired from Scarface in this game but I was glad when Tommy survived at the end.
You also get to manage businesses by purchasing them and collecting money earned from your properties which gave you a very good feeling about yourself after collecting cash from them. Oh and not to forget those smartly placed hidden trophies. Getting them felt hugely rewarding because you would find them on the most unusual places.
The other interesting part about the open world of this game has to be the level of detail that Rockstar put into the map. My favourite thing to do was to go inside the mall ahead of the Malibu Club and stealing that Infernus inside it while driving it all around the mall. This is what makes GTA series so interesting. They give you an open world to live in it the way you want. And of course, the cheat codes.
Those cheat codes made the game even more interesting to play. I will admit that sometimes I used a lot of cheat codes to complete missions. I did complete the game but I would say that almost 30% of the game missions I completed using cheat codes. My favourite cheat codes from Vice City are PANZER, PROFESSIONALTOOLS, LEAVEMEALONE, ASPIRINE and of course FANNYMAGNET.
This game pioneered the GTA franchise into a new era and set the bar higher for it’s successor. Of course, it’s successor GTA San Andreas went on to become an even bigger game and personally it feels like GTA San Andreas is still the best in the series even after GTA V has launched.
