Rivian R1S vs Lucid Gravity: WHICH IS THE BEST ELECTRIC SUV FOR 2022?

The seven-passenger 2022 Rivian R1S sport-utility vehicle will be the second production model from Rivian, an upstart electric vehicle manufacturer based in California. The first-ever R1S takes direct aim at the Tesla Model X, which is the only other three-row all-electric SUV currently available. The R1S will also be less expensive than the Model X when it goes on sale. The R1S shares many of its attributes with the R1T pickup. Like the R1T, it offers a 128.9-kWh battery pack that the EPA estimates is good for 316 miles of driving per charge. The R1S will be sold directly to consumers, although Rivian says that it also will set up a network of service centers and Tesla-like stores.
What's New for 2022?
Rivian is starting off by delivering orders of the Launch Edition. For 2022, the R1S is only offered with a quad-motor setup and a 128.9-kWh "Large" battery. Rivian also significantly raised the price of 2022 R1S models, a move that initially impacted people who made reservations before March 1, 2022, but the company later backtracked that specific decision in the wake of customer backlash. Next year, a more affordable, entry-level Explore model is expected to join the lineup. A new dual-motor configuration making over 600 horsepower will enter production, too, alongside a smaller standard battery (dual-motor models only) and a larger "Max" battery pack (quad-motor models only).
Not content with simply launching an electric sedan with more than 1,000 hp and a 500-plus-mile range, the mad and elegantly inclined geniuses at Lucid Motors are cooking up a new SUV called the Gravity. We still can't confirm everything about the Gravity, but we do know two key things: First, the model will sit on the same long-wheelbase version of Lucid's skateboard platform as the Air, so the SUV's length should be close to identical to that of its sedan sibling. The Gravity looks wider, however, and will, of course, be much taller. Second, vice president of design Derek Jenkins is an off-roading enthusiast who has built his own hot-rodded, VW-powered dune buggy, so it's a safe bet the Gravity will have some serious off-road chops.
WHY IT MATTERS: The car world has gone mad with SUV fever. Sedans are dying, so if Lucid hopes to become a true player, it needs to bring an SUV to market—and quick. Also, during the pandemic, Americans fell back in love with off-roading. Why should GMC's upcoming Hummer EV have all the electric dirt-slinging fun?
PLATFORM AND POWERTRAIN: The platform and motors should be nearly identical to the Air's, so at one end of the lineup, look for a single-motor Gravity offering 480 or 620 hp and something like 360 miles of range. There will be two versions of the dual-motor SUV: one with 800 horses another with 1,080 hp. Depending on the wheel and tire fitment, range figures should stretch to 400 or 450 miles. No word on a three-motor Gravity to match the mightiest Air, but why the heck not?
ESTIMATED PRICE: The SUV will land with a starting price of around $85,000. Prices should top out just shy of $180,000.
