On July 27, 2010, troubled oil conglomerate BP announced the elevation of Robert Dudley to the title of CEO, replacing Tony Hayward effective on October 1, 2010.
Dudley will be the first American to run the British company in it's 91 year history. A Mississippi native whose rise through the ranks included time overseeing BP operations in the Caspian Sea and Russia and included some time actually on a rig, Dudley will try to help rehabilitate the company's public image following April's Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The Associated Press reported that the company would announce a record loss of $17 billion in the second quarter.
Dudley replaces the outgoing Hayward, who's controversial term as the company's CEO was further exacerbated when it was revealed in The Guardian that his 'golden parachute' will include a payout of $1.6 million and a pension of up to $11 million. Hayward actually beat out Dudley for the CEO position three years ago.
Hayward said that he felt "demonized" in the United States as the face of the company responsible for one of the worst man-made environmental disasters in history. He went on to state that the company has, "been a model of corporate social responsibility."
