Synopsis

This game is based on Robotech the anime series which was aired on television in 1985. There were three generations or chapters in the series, the first generation being about the Zentradi, 2nd generation being about the Robotech Masters, and 3rd generation being about Invid Invasion. This game is based on the 3rd generation or last episodes of the Robotech series. The Invid Invasion series were a bit melancholy and dark in tone. It wasn't as upbeat as the 1st and 2nd generations. The reason for it was due to the fact that the Earth was completely subjugated by the Invid aliens. The background of the story is in a post apocalyptic landscape where you don't have the rule of law, cities are in ruins, state of quasi anarchy, and alien control. The aliens don't control the humans directly, they govern it in a very loose fashion. They leave the human survivors alone for the most part, but they want to eradicate all the people who resist their rule. As you can see from this game footage, the invasion to reclaim Earth was a total failure. In the T.V. series, it was about Scott Bernard and his small band of resistance fighters. Scott was also part of the failed expeditionary force like the character you are playing in this game. Your goals in the game is the same as Scott's which is to reach reflex point and destroy it. It would have been better if you played Scott Bernard, but instead you are part of a parallel story. Kind of like Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, you don't play the main characters from the movie, but you are part of all the main events from the film. In some parts of the game, you do see events which played out in the movie. The story line for this game is like that.

As for the game play, it is a typical 3d shooter. You can change views from 1st person or 3rd person. The graphics are what you would have expected from a game in 2004 or the early 2000s. The graphics are kind of like Shogo Mobile Armored Division or Halo from 2001. The background detail is bland, it isn't like games like Fallout 3, Max Payne 3, Crysis 3, or Fallout 4 where you can see the landscape and see blades of grass, trees with textures, or detailed textures on buildings. I guess this was due to the limitations of technology at the time. Never the less, this game is very good, and it captures the essence of Robotech. It is the game fans of Robotech would have wanted. I believe it came a little too late. It also lacked veritech fighters and that was a real bummer. You can only play in cyclone mode. In the anime series, the main character and his band did have alpha veritech fighters, and they also fought in their cyclones as well. If they had veritech fighters in Robotech BattleCry released 2 years earlier, why couldn't they have it in this game? Other than that, it was a good game.

The game controls are good, but it would have been nice if you could play with a mouse and keyboard. Playing with the 6 axis PS-2 control pad is okay, but it does limit your ability to shoot on the move. The controls are responsive and the game is programmed well. This game is a representation of what games were like in the early 2000s. In North America, they never released one Robotech game before 2002. However in Japan, they did have a Robotech game in the 1990s, and it was called Super Fortress Macross and Macross by Banpresto. Those games were 2d side scrolling shooters or isometric 2d games. It took them 17 years to release any Robotech games in North America which was weird, because Robotech was a very popular cartoon series. I bought Robotech BattleCry and this game when they came out, because Robotech was a cultural icon for me. It was rather disappointing that it came out so late, because in 2002 I was like 27 years old. When you get to your late 20s, you are busy making a living. I really didn't have much time to play these games, and they pretty much sat in my closet from 2002 and 2004 to today.
