Rocket League Review
Rocket League review
Rocket league is a ridiculous premise that delivers in a way that is completely fun and unexpected. I’ve seen lots of people playing it online, and I wanted to check it out, but the 19.99 price point didn’t scare me away, it just made me say, I’ll wait for a sale. I lucked out as anyone that bought steam related hardware got the game for free this week, thanks valve! The game is basically soccer, but with cars, and rockets, I know it sounds stupid, but I assure you it's not.
The matches are 5 minutes long, about 7 minutes with all the instant replays and what not. There is a giant ball and you have to push that ball into the goal.
The game has modes for 1v1 all the way up to 4v4, I’ve played exclusively on 3v3, and I really love it. The game features split screen multiplayer as well, so if you want to have some couch co-op you can. My son and I will have some fun with this once my Steam Link gets here and I have the extra controllers to use on the TV.
Rocket League is being set up by Psyonix as an eSports Title, and I really think they have lightning in a bottle here. Even in my first match I had an AMAZING save, not sure if I recorded that, but watching moments like that is super fun, and I can see this becoming a big deal in tournament gaming.
What makes Rocket League great?
Controls
It’s a driving game, it handles great, they could easily turn this game into a racing game. you’ve got forward/reverse, powerslide, jump and boost. The
Graphics
Rocket League is beautiful, and it better be, my machine is pretty beefy, and I had trouble streaming it on YouTube Gaming at 720p60fps, which is how I usually stream games. That being said, the colors are bright, the the stadiums are detailed. I would have liked to see some more detail in the cars, but that might just be because I haven't played enough to unlock more stuff.
Speaking of the cars, they resemble matchbox cars more than real cars and I love this. Many of the cars in the game very much remind me of matchbox cars, not only with how they look but the awesome way they smash into each other without a scratch. (most of the time) This takes me back to when I was a kid playing with my matchbox collection and smashing them into each other at the bottom of a ramp, or putting two ramps facing each other and getting the cars to collide on the way down.
Sound
The game sounds great, the music isn’t really the stuff that I like, but its only there in the menu and you can turn it off any time you like. The cars sound powerful, and the boost sounds are varied depending on what accent you have. I would have liked a way to let the game pipe in my music, but that’s easy enough to just play something in Foobar in the background.
What isn’t so great
Level design
I have ZERO bad to say about this game, its really great, but if I were to change anything it would be the level design.
Just because its based on soccer doesn’t mean that you have to have every stadium be socker field shaped, I think it would be really cool if they added other shapes, like a horseshoe, or a zig zag, perhaps a big loop, with a cross through the middle.
Speaking of which there isn’t anything saying that the goals have to be at the end, or that there can only be two goals, or even two teams. What if they had levels like mario kart battle mode but with the soccer ball?
What if they had a drag race mode, where every player had their own lane and ball, and you had to get the ball into the goal a long way away the fastest? Fun little mini games like that could really make a great game a fantastic game!
Who am I kidding, this game is fantastic, BUT, it could be …. FANTASTICAR?
You know what? I was wrong, I forgot something about the game that I don’t like, AFK people. There doesn’t seem to be a way to kick people for being AFK, and I had someone in AFK for two matches in a row. I don’t know how long they were there for because I left after the second match. There needs to be a vote kick option, or if there already is and I don’t know about it, then the developers need a way to surface that interface to the top so that players know about it.
