Crenellation apparently refers to "crenels" (rectangular gaps) being cut into a previously solid parapet wall. The solid widths between the crenels are "merlons". https://www.designingbuildings.co.uk/wiki/Crenellations_on_buildings

If the crenels are the gaps, sitting on them sounds pretty impressive. Or maybe a crenallation refers to the whole structure including both the crenels and merlons. Except it sounds like the whole structure is a battlement and crenallation is a style of battlement. Or something like that? I expect the details of the terminology aren't going to be too important.
