Launched in 1945, the Rolex Datejust is an all-time great among luxury watch models. Originally a 36mm watch with three hands and a date, the Datejust has defied time, fleeting fashions, and competitors; at 76 years old, Rolex’s longtime standard-bearer is an evergreen delight. Today’s Datejust model is the reference 116234. Composed of 904L stainless steel and 18-karat white gold, this example incorporates elements of dress watches and sports watches.
The sporty side of this Datejust is evident in its fully luminescent dial, primarily steel construction, and Rolex Oyster bracelet. All of these options allow this watch to be used for swimming and at night; the Oyster bracelet offers greater physical resilience than the Jubilee. Also sporty in appearance, the Oyster endows the DJ36 with some of the effortless cool factor of the Submariner, GMT-Master, and Daytona.
Inside the Oyster case, the Rolex caliber 3135 automatic movement enjoys 100-meter water resistance. This manufacture movement includes a 48-hour power reserve, hacking seconds, and a quickset date. For good measure, Rolex certifies the 3135 with the COSC as a Swiss chronometer. Additional refinements include a full balance bridge for strength, a free sprung balance for stability and precision, and a handmade Breguet overcoil hairspring for consistent timing in any position.
