A playthrough of HAL's 1990 pinball game for the NES, Rollerball.

Rollerball is a heavily overhauled remake of HAL's 1984 MSX pinball game of the same name. It offers two game modes. The first, Skyscraper, is the main attraction. Up to four players can take turns shooting for high scores as they "challenge the skyscraper" on a four screen tall, New York-themed table. The second, Match, is a competitive two-player mode that takes place on a simple single-screen table.

The Skyscraper is a fun table layout, with multiple routes directing you toward a multitude of flashing, buzzing, spinning things to be whacked for points, and the gameplay is smooth thanks to the responsive flipper action and reliable ball physics. Between that, the great background art, and a catchy soundtrack, Rollerball is an excellent 8-bit take on pinball. It's not flashy, and there isn't a ton of content, but it nails the basics better than arguably anything else on the NES. If you enjoyed the original Nintendo Pinball, or Revenge of the Gator on the Game Boy, you'll find a lot to like in this classic.

And here's a fun fact: Satoru Iwata was involved with the development of Pinball for the NES and Rollerball for the MSX, both released in 1984, which helps to account for the many similarities between them. Four years later, he also served as producer on the Famicom version of the remake.
