Rolls Royce is known to be the most luxurious automobile manufacturer. They are also one of the oldest car manufacturers in the world. Many rich people own a Rolls Royce because of the luxurious experience it offers and because of the style statement. Well, you must have heard a story of an Indian Maharaja who used the Rolls Royce cars for garbage collection.
If you are not familiar with the story, here is one of many versions of the story. Maharaja Jai Singh once visited London. He was just casually roaming in his casual attire during a city tour. During the tour, Maharaja Jai Singh spotted a showroom of Rolls Royce. He entered the showroom and wanted to know more about the brand and their cars. However, the manager of the showroom did not allow the Maharaja to enter the store because of his ‘Indian’ casual attire. He thought that Maharaja was a beggar. Coming back to India, Maharaja Jai Singh was very angry and felt insulted by the manager of the showroom. So, he ordered six cars from Rolls Royce. All of them were shipped to India. As an act of revenge, Maharaja Jai Singh decided to donate all the six Rolls Royce cars to the municipality so that they can use them as a garbage truck.
किस्सा 1920 के दशक का है। अलवर के महाराजा जय सिंह अपने लंदन प्रवास के दौरान रोल्स रॉयस के शोरूम में गए दुनिया की सबसे महंगी कार की टेस्ट ड्राइव करनी चाही। लेकिन सेल्समैन ने उन्हें वहां से दफा हो जाने के लिए कह दिया क्योंकि जब जय सिंह शोरूम में दाखिल हुए, तब उनका एस्कॉर्ट उनके साथ नहीं था। उन्होंने कपड़े भी कैजुअल अंदाज़ में पहन रखे थे लिहाजा, सेल्समैन उन्हें आम भारतीय समझने की गलती कर बैठा और उन्हें नज़रअंदाज़ कर दिया। खुद के साथ हुई बदसलकूी से महाराजा जय सिंह इतने खफा हो गए कि उन्होंने कंपनी को सबक सिखाने की ठान ली। वह दोबारा पूरी शानो-शौकत के साथ उसी शोरूम में दाखिल हुए। 7 रोल्स रॉयस कारें खरीदीं, शर्त रखी कि कार के साथ-साथ वह 'बदतमीज़' सेल्समैन भी भारत में उनके महल तक पहुंचाया जाए। हल पहुंचते ही महाराजा ने उस सेल्समैन के सामने अपने सेवकों को आदेश दिया कि उन सभी 7 चमचमाती कारों से पूरे एक महीने तक अलवर का कूड़ा उठवाया जाए। कबूतरों के ज़माने में भी यह खबर आग की तरह फैल गई। कंपनी की इतनी बदनामी होने लगी कि कर्मियों को महाराजा से लिखित तौर पर माफी मांगनी पड़ी।
