Sun Quan led a coalition against Cao Cao. While Wen Shang led the army of Tianshui south to defend against Liu Cong's forces, Ma Teng launched an attack before he could return. Bu Lianshi, whom Shang had met in Changan (why she was serving Cao Cao and not married to Sun Quan, I have no idea) and later married, was captured alongside Cao Cao's wife Bian Shi and Zhou Cang's adopted daughter Mei Ying that he insisted that Wen Shang should wed. A week later, as Wen Shang musters his forces to free them, a courier brings word that Lianshi has been executed by Ma Teng. Furious, Shang marches his ill-prepared troops to battle. The first wave of defenders are decimated, but Pang De leads a swift charge behind enemy lines and crushes Wen Shang's main camp. His forces in complete disarray, Wen Shang is soundly defeated. His desperate attempt that follows ends in humiliation. Then Bian Shi was executed as well. Wen Shang then amassed a massive army, only to have Ma Teng surrender without a fight.
