RPG Maker Let's Play - Expiation Demo - Game Critique
12Hey everyone! In this RPG Maker Let's Play we fall into the world of Expiation, an adventure with a few unique twists, but ultimately needs a lot of polish and work before it's ready.
First off, it's painfully apparent that this game is written by someone who's first language isn't English, and while that gives it certain allowances, eventually they'll need someone to go through the game script and fix the writing to be easier to understand. It's not terrible by a long shot, but there are obvious mistakes in the sentence structure.
Second, the characters are all over the map, especially Kellan, who flip-flops on his opinion of the protagonist repeatedly throughout the playthrough. It's not just him. One minute, a character is grateful, the next they are suspicious, then they are dismissive. It's a delicate game of balance, we know, but there is still more work to be done.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the protagonist is utterly useless in combat, to the point of being a detriment to the party. There needs to be a skill or an ability or something that sets him apart from the others and gives him a defining edge, and it needs to be from the beginning. Also, the level disparage between the protagonist and the others is too high (Level 1 to Level 14? Wow!).
Also, no starting dungeon to explore? Bold move!
However, there are a few things about this game that are absolutely wonderful. First off, the sidequests are seamlessly integrated into the story. One moment you are having a conversation, the next you are on a sidequest. Second, the premise is actually pretty cool: A young boy is transported to another world and has to find his way home. While that in itself is not unique, the hook is that the boy himself appears integrated in the world by some mysterious means. We wanted to know more about that. Lastly, the protagonist is Greek, which is something we've never seen before.
This game needs a lot of work and a lot of polish, but could be something really special once it receives developer love.
