The return of the Legends of Heroes series outside of Japan, A Tear of Vermillion is the first/second (originally second in Japan, released first internationally) of the Gagharv trilogy.

In a Cathedral of Bardus, the god of Light, orphans Avin and his sister Eimelle are playing when the church is attacked by the Apostles of Octum, the god of Darkness. They flee, but during their escape Avin gets split up from Eimelle, and ends up in a quiet village where he's raised by an old Sage.

There he stays until the Sage reaches the end of his days, and Avin heads off in search of his sister...
