Fulgurite (from Latin fulgur - lightning strike + Greek εἶδος - similar) - sintered from a lightning strike SiO2 (sand, quartz, silica) - clastofulgurites, as well as surfaces of any rocks (petrofulgurites) melted in the same way.

When a very powerful lightning strikes the Earth's surface, sintered SiO2 forms hollow branched tubes (in fact, glass) with a smooth inner surface or covered with small bubbles in the thickness of the soil. Sometimes separate drops are formed. The appearance of the glass tube is due to the fact that there is always air and moisture between the grains of sand. The electric current of lightning in a split second heats air and water vapor to enormous temperatures, causing an explosive increase in air pressure between grains of sand and its expansion. The expanding air forms a cylindrical cavity within the molten sand. The subsequent rapid cooling fixes the fulgurite - a glass tube in the sand.
