As promised, today i'll be continuing my survival horror-themed lineup, this time with one of the more controversial and in my opinion, unnerving video games played on this channel since its inception. The game in question is of course, Rule Of Rose so sit back, relax (if you can) and enjoy the gameplay.
About Game: Rule Of Rose is 2006 survival horror video game developed by Punchline and published by Sony Computer Entertainment as PlayStation 2 exclusive. Upon release, Rule Of Rose was met with mostly mixed reviews as critics and players extensively praised the game's atmosphere, graphics, music, characters and mature themes its premise touches upon but were very critical of the gameplay which was described as "archaic" and generally slow with this having garnered the game an reputation of one of the worst survival horror titles from 2000s. However, Rule Of Rose is also infamous for the moral panic its release caused in Europe, especially in United Kingdom which outright banned the game alongside Australia and New Zealand after the rumors claiming that the game depicts explicit sexual imagery involving children surfaced shortly before the game's release in the West in late 2006, although those rumors were proven to be false once the game actually released. Due to this controversy, Rule Of Rose was fully released only in North America through Atlus USA after SCE America refused to publish it and in Japan with this relatively limited release radius making the physical copies of Rule Of Rose prized collectors' items which can command significant prices as of 2024. Due to its highly controversial status, mixed reception upon release and its developer having since ceased to exist, Rule Of Rose is very unlikely to ever receive a sequel but still retains a dedicated cult following.
Story of the game is set in England shortly before the outbreak of World War 2 and follows Jennifer, 19-year old girl who finds herself dragged into a world ruled by a collective of sadistic children who refer to themselves as Red Crayon Aristocrat Club. Trapped and under the threat of death, Jennifer finds herself forcefully inducted into the club's hiearchy as its lowest-ranking member, being forced to take part in the club's tradition of the monthly gift in order to keep them appeased while also trying to survive against small, doll-like monsters prowling the Aristocrats' airship and uncovering the club's connection to her own past as an orpahan a decade prior.
One night, Jennifer takes a bus ride near the village of Cardington, England. During the ride, she is approached by a mysterious boy who gives Jennifer a hand-made storybook and asks her to read it to him. However, as Jennifer opens it, she finds that all of the pages are blank. Before she can question the boy, the bus stops and he gets off, prompting Jennifer to go after him. With the bus leaving before Jennifer is able to call the boy back, she is forced to follow him into the woods near the bus station, eventually ending up near the abandoned house in whose courtyard she sees two girls with bags over their heads beating something trapped in a sack. Horrified by the scene but intent on finding the boy who entered the house, Jennifer circles around the house's perimeter and enters it from the back door. Within the house, she proceeds to chase the boy to its attic. There, he mocks her for failing to catch him and urges her to open the book he gave her to see its ending. As she does, unseen public announcement system announces that the "funeral" is about to begin. With the boy having vanished by the time Jennifer finishes with the book, she proceeds to make her way into the house's inner courtyard. Sensing that something is buried in the courtyard, Jennifer takes the nearby shovel and proceeds to dig, eventually digging up a wooden crate with a bloodied bag inside. As she watches on, four girls with bags over their heads approach her from behind and proceed to abuse her by pouring pitchers of water over her before shoving her into the crate with the bloodied bag, trapping her inside and carrying her off with Jennifer soon passing out...
