Welcome to another What If playlist scenario, where some tactical alternatives will be explored for a specific scenario to evaluate whether these alternatives determine a different outcome.
In this episode we will use scenario S69 from Starter Kit4, which deals with Pacific Theatre of Operations.
The scenario is called Stovepipe Funeral
Background:
Charan Kanoa, Saipan, June 15, 1944
As part of the invasion to capture the strategically important Southern Mariana Islands, Major General Thomas Watson of the Second Marine Division landed on the southwest coast of the island of Saipan on June 15.
Lieutenant General Yoshitsugo Saito chose not to expose the bulk of his troops to American coastal bombardment, but instead deployed the 43rd Infantry Division and 9th Tank Regiment in the interior of the island from where they could counterattack the American bridgehead on the beach and push the invaders into the sea.
The Marines landed under fire, but quickly advanced and established a bridgehead, blocking the coastal highway north of Charan Kanoa.
Saito used the advantage of flat, open terrain to launch a combined arms attack led by Colonel Takashi Goto of the 9th Tank Regiment to destroy the Marine position before the Americans could bring the weight of their forces to bear.
English Spoken, Portuguese subtitles.
