Saints Row - Part 6
0As GTA clones go, sometimes they can be quite formulaic and boring. Occasionally you find some gold amongst the boring like Sleeping Dogs or Mafia... and occasionally they're guff like Godfather 2, and Driver 3. Luckily, Saints Row is in the former camp. You create your character and jump into the world of gang wars in Stillwater (based on Detroit and Baltimore), brought to life by colourful and well-written characters played by an ensemble cast including Tia Carrere, David Carradine, Clancy Brown, Michael Rapaport, Mila Kunis, Michael Clarke-Duncan and the mighty Keith David.
Whilst there are several GTA tropes like varying radio stations (boasting anything from rock to hip hop to talk radio), vehicle hunting, hitman contracts and racing - Saints Row has some imaginative side missions like escorts (evading the press whilst celebrities get their rocks off) and insurance fraud. I also loved the idea of three separate gang storylines that can be tackled in any order - and the fact that SR leans into it's humour and absurdity. If you look at the sequels then that becomes an understatement.
Of course, this earlier instalment can come across as unoriginal at times, its a little short in length - and quality of life features like triggers for driving, limited weapon types and vehicle upgrades and lock on aiming can be difficult to adjust to in 2023 - but the game holds up as an enjoyable affair 17 years after release, and many games can't make that claim. It also spawned a successful franchise, so there's that.
