QUESTIONS & ANSWERS (Read after you're done watching the review):
Q: Which is the better game: SW4 or SW4-II?
A: They both have their ups and downs. However, due to SW4-II fixing various issues with the original including improving/balancing difficulty, as well as adding useful new features, it is definitely better in the gameplay aspect (albeit taking away a small amount that was good). SW4 arguably has the better story and extra mode (Chronicle).
Q: Which is a better game to start off with, if I've never played either before?
A: Samurai Warriors 4-II, most likely.
Q: I heard the game doesn't allow the transfer of save data from SW4?
A: That is true. However, it is not a problem as SW4-II is not an expansion, so it makes sense to not allow transfers as it would make the game unfairly easy and dull. You can still transfers your CAW (custom characters) over, however.
Q: Can you use DLC content from the original Samurai Warriors 4 in II and vice versa?
A: I'm not experienced in that, unfortunately. Usually, original and XL allowed cross-over DLCs, but II may be different as its a standalone game.
Q: Are all characters playable in Story Mode?
A: No, a few are left out and therefore can only be played using Free Mode.
Q: Which Story Mode is better for the storyline and characters?
A: Again, refer to the first question. If you want to see all the story in its entirety, you should play both SW4 and SW4-II. Certain characters in SW4-II receive more spotlight as opposed to getting the short end of the stick in SW4, and vice versa.
Q: What is the online play like, has it changed from SW4?
A: Unfortunately, I cannot answer any questions regarding online play as I did not have a chance to experience that part of either game.
Q: What score/grade would you give SW4-II?
A: I will no longer hand out scores because I want the viewers to make their own judgements at the end of the review.
Q: Is SW4-II a bad game?
A: No, it is above average at the very least.
Q: What do you mean when you say the combat feels dated and lacks depth?
A: While you have a lot of available attacks/moves at your arsenal, the amount of depth you have with them are limited. You cannot chain together most moves into successful juggles (e.g. move into Musou, move into Hyper Attack). Additionally, the only real cancel in the game is Spirit Charge, which would be alright if it didn't cost energy to use. When compared to recent DWs, you had unrestricted cancels such as jump cancel and shadow dash. Not to mention most moves can be juggle chained into others. The weapon switching then takes everything to a whole another level. In the end, the combat feels restricted and therefore isn't really geared towards those who say, desire a DMC style combat. If you just want basic combat that's flashy and fun without having to think much, then SW4/SW4-II is completely perfect in that regard.
Q: Can you elaborate on why you felt the SW series did not evolve much compared to DW series?
A: DW added a lot more game changing features (such as weapon switching, big branching/hypothetical storylines, character classes, explorable hub, great weapon fusion, etc.). Not to mention movesets have been already wholly redone twice.
Q: But the SW series are only up to 4, we should not expect movesets to be redone until at least the 6th game, like DW?
A: True, but KOEI/Omega Force has had 11 years of development time to create new movesets for SW. Since they are literally making several Musous games a year, it's really no excuse to start at least revamping movesets. Otherwise, players would continue to feel like they're paying a decade old game.
