House music on X16?
This is one of those cases where you just know it would/should/will/must work on CX16. It’s made of mostly sampled PSG waves Square Saw. Now working on real 8bit chips, fakebit title goes bye-bye.
Found it in a FT2 compilation, and what a treat it is!
Just count how many variation of chords it’s used? Boy I don’t even think Plastic Dreams got than many.
If it isn’t for the repeated melody, I’d say it’s Through-composed/Episodic.
Holding the 1st chord to create suspension for tension.
Very smooth tonal modulation. Making the outro higher key to make the whole song more memorable.
Some of the Arp reminds me of songs in C418’s MC,Alpha.
There’s a very quiet high octave arp plays throughout the whole song to grab you ear and let you to remember without realizing.
Uses a lot of notes cut command for that sweet expressive timings.
It’s rather impressive to know how volume plays an important role in the determination of the timber of the sound. The piano like instrument is just some sawtooth played at low volume, the string like instrument is just 12.5?Pulse at low volume with a ton of pitch bents and PWM. However, they sound like those instruments. This could be a psychoacoustic effect of some other bands from other instruments got prevised by the brain as well as the sidebands of the said instrument/waves, your brain just had so “little” to work with. What a fascination!
That said, the 12.5-alike pulse when measuring isn’t really NES 12.5. same with the 25/75 and the 7.25 samples used in original, they all off. Author haven’t disclosed if it’s intentional or not. But if it sounds great, it’s all fine!
Good job VERA isn’t 2A03, there’s 6bit of pulse width to choose from, I can emulate them perfectly.
The HH is played soo quiet that it almost feels like a metronome used in composing but did not remove/enhance.
Don’t you think the Snare sounds more like clap than SD, or is it just me?
Of course, it's not all gravy train, some compromises were made, like the Drums.
To premix down the five channel Drums into one channel big samples and keep the sample lower than 512KB which is a limit for sample streaming or on 512K ram models, one bar of variations was omitted.
The intro is 16bit sample for its cymbal only and that really need those SNR, latter were all 8bit samples.
Thankfully, there’s a neatly placed Crash cymbal to hide the changing sample bit depth.
Lead, from 8 channels to only 6 PSG channels. Although somehow, I think the author did intent to only use 6 channels, but later use 8 because it's there.
Sadly, YM2151 don't have the extra OPL3 waves that baseline used. I manually approximated two instruments. They sound alright but not the same.
Though, there’s still some undesirable hifrequency content on the INS.07 bassline, it’s undetectable when playing but it’s there.
VERA being an actual PSG, I can't really control the phase between channels.
So, I can't reliably reproduce the +pi phase diff sawtooth for the effect used. I detune the channels for similar phasing effect.
On to the arp panning issue. In the original, the panning is done by the tracker using Xxx command a very smooth softpan.
However, I’ll need to manually do it since VERA don’t support soft panning. This is the few instances where the log volume is a bit iffy, added that there’s intermodulation between channels.
But with the kind helps from author and furnace discord, it’s much improved.

Enjoy!
