Saturn shooter review: Raystorm (arcade) vs. Layer Section II (Saturn)
35Here's a comparison between the arcade version of Raystorm (shown here on the PS2 Taito Legends 2 compilation) and the Saturn port known as Layer Section II.
Graphically and soundwise you'll notice that the Saturn is lacking in dynamic range and appears to have less lighting gradients in the textures and polys. However it moves as smoothly as the arcade and gameplay is more or less identical. I understand that the Playstation 1 version features an Extra Mode with enhanced graphics and slightly different gameplay features.
Overall I don't really rate this game, although it picks up at level 3. It feels clumsy and unresponsive compared with most 2D shooters.
If you're into collecting your Saturn shooters it's gonna be on your list, but compared to the original Layer Section (Rayforce) it's a pile of skid.
