Introduction:
Save me Mr Tako Definitive edition, a platformer that came out in 2018 has been updated to a welcomed 2021 ‘definitive edition’ by French dev Christophe Galati.
This new 'definitive' aspect game adds much needed easier game mode options, hints, filters and other tweaks but with either version of the game it’s still a solid piece of gaming development.
BTW Full disclosure, Limited Run did provide a review copy, but the review is all me. And thanks to Limited run we have two copies to give away! Simply subscribe, like this video and tell us your favourite game boy game in the YT comments. We'll pick two winners at the end of May 2021 and each person will receive a game code.
Design & Gameplay:
In what looks like an old Gameboy game revamped, is a newly designed by choice retro game. The original launch trailer in 2018 even heavily used the Gameboy as influence. This is just full of retro charm. From the opening sequence, the gorgeous pixels and very Japanese kooky Octopus pacifist helping humans and fairies out there.
Think Zelda, kirby, even some Shovel knight or Mario and you are on the right tracks.
So let's get a look at the actual game.
Features
- 6 worlds and more than 50 levels to explore
- Mr. Tako has 50 different hats that Tako can wear to gain special abilities such as the Unicorn hat, baby zilla hat, I've been using the arrow hat the most so far which lets you shoot far longer than your standard ink
- Side quests, puzzles, mini-games and 16 different dungeons to explore
- Multiple selectable palettes to change the game’s color scheme
- Appears to be about 20-25 hrs of game play value for every aspect, or a little faster skipping side quests.
- 1ups (which are seaweed or Kelp) are fairly placed.
- Damage to bosses stays even if you respawn after a life lost which is fair.
Positives
- the pixel design is gorgeous, just so well done and the charm and gameboy factor has me hooked.
- Sound is good and just as you think it's getting repetitive and it changes up as over 100 tracks
- Filters are quite nice and you'll see moody blue shades underwater, and bright greens and yellows on land
- Save locations are fair and the ink meter is pretty generous on story mode but this gets far harder later on.
-The story is quite full and there are a LOT of side quests which lost me a little as part of the main game. Not really a negative as lots of value, but does require you to keep track and pay attention.
Negatives
- Previous owners do not get an upgrade, you have to buy the game again
- Some door ways can be a little buggy and no register but seems to be fine directly on the unit and might just be bluetooth pro controller
- Lots of tricky jumping and save points are very limited further in the game, unless you have story mode.
Overall 8/10 for me
