The Sawtooth is a medium-sized Combat Class Machine, and was developed solely to protect Zero Dawn terraforming units from Human predation, and are of the first known examples of its class.

In appearance they resemble a Sabre-Tooth Cat, being heavily built at the front, with a large, broad chest and shoulders, four powerful legs; and Two optical sensor arrays on its face.
It also has three long antennas coming out from its back. A power cell sits atop its hindquarters, and a canister of Blaze is enclosed within its chest.
For weaponry, the SawTooth is a pure melee-fighter; Its mouth is equipped with a pair of curved, serrated fangs, and it has long claws on its feet. Their attacks centre on lunging and slashing with their claws, and biting with their huge canines.
They are well protected, with a Hard outer casing protecting synthetic muscle and operational systems. But, are vulnerable to fire-based attacks, like Fire-Arrows, Traps, and Bombs, as well as the ForgeFire weapon.
Despite their size and heavyset chassis, a Sawtooth is highly agile and capable of great speed; Designed for rapid sprinting and pouncing, they will very quickly close the distance on an identified threat.
The name “Sawtooth” was coined by a member of the Carja Hunters Lodge, who was the first to successfully kill one.
Sawtooths are typically found either alone, or in groups of up to three or four, and are often seen protecting herds of terraformers alongside Watchers, which will act as lookouts, alerting the Sawtooth if a threat is detected.
Their footsteps make a distinctive, heavy thud while walking, and they emit deep, fearsome growls and roars.

Unlike terraforming machines, which were designed and controlled by Zero Dawn’s governing AI GAIA, the Sawtooth was designed by HEPHAESTUS, which had previously manufactured the machines under GAIA’s direction, but when GAIA self-destructed, HEPHAESTUS gained absolute control over machine design and production.
Hostile toward humans for their hunting of the terraforming machines for parts and resources, HEPHAESTUS made all the machines hostile towards humans, a phenomenon the tribes call the Derangement.
Sawtooths were one of the first Combat Class machines created in this escalation of aggression towards Humans.
They proved to be far more dangerous than any other machine previously encountered by the Nora tribe, and Hunting became far more dangerous due to their presence. And in the Nora's Sacred Land territory, they would begin to attack villages and hunting lodges.

The hunting of a Sawtooth was the final test given to Aloy by her mentor Rost, as part of her training to become what was known as a “Brave” which is what the Nora Tribe’s Warriors are called.
