Scathe Demo (First Impression with Commentary)
Yet another game a friend requested I play. I was told it was a lot like Serious Sam but it's got nothing in common except for there's lots of shooting.
I know it's a free demo and hasn't even been released in EA so I shouldn't be super critical, but it's kind of hard not to. The shooting feels bland and repetitive, the guns sound like spitball launchers, enemies lack unique sounds and the sound effects blend together easily, and of course you can't rebind your movement keys... Worse yet, you can't rebind anything on the keyboard; seriously, who thought this was a good idea!
Also, comparing this thing to Serious Sam is an insult. Sure, Sam's AI isn't groundbreaking, but what makes that game unique is how enemy types are mixed and matched together to form different combat scenarios. Sure you can argue both games' enemies are one dimensional in their attack styles, but what makes Sam's enemies stand out are their personality traits. All of Sam's enemies have unique sounds, colors, animations, particle effects, and silhouettes that let players know what they're up against at any given moment, and these are all things this game's enemies are lacking.
For now, I can't really recommend the game. The Demo is of course free so there's no risk in trying it out for yourself if you're curious. I'll probably do a follow-up video in a few days to see if my opinions have changed but I'd wait for a new demo or EA build before giving this thing another try.
Thanks again for watching and as always, stay Serious!
