The second movement of the Octet is a superb Adagio. Right from the beginning, as we hear the clarinet play the main theme, the piece sings with an unmistakably Schubertian voice.
Similarly to the second movement of Schubert's own Symphony No. 8, the "Unfinished Symphony", this one is in an expansive version of sonatina form, that is, after the exposition is over we move straight to the recapitulation (4:48), a varied repetition of it, without going through any development in between.

The coda is bewitching (9:01), with an almost canon-like rendition of the main theme being led to a dead-end that stops almost all momentum (9:23). The clarinet that opened the movement is then tasked with restoring said momentum (9:30 and allowing the movement to reach its peaceful fulfillment and conclusion.
