Scream is a franchise now. The characters say this about the fake movie within the movie, Stab. So that means the stakes are even higher as legacy characters can die and everyone is a suspect. It also means the Scream series needs to innovate to stay fresh or it will become just another boring Fast & the Furious entry, doing the same thing over and over. Some of the legacy characters are back in Scream VI like Gale Weathers although I would of preferred that not be the case. These ladies have had so much work done, they are just as scary as the killer. Scream VI continues to play with the genre and poke fun of itself but it might not be enough to get invested.
