This is a world where large corporations control the world's resources and economy, and even countries and governments are controlled by corporate profits (money). The Earth is now completely divided into an "upper class" comprising approximately 1% of the population and 99% of the population comprising "slaves." Naturally, the majority of humanity does not accept this situation and begins rebelling against their rulers. Those who fight for justice and order (players) are labeled criminals or terrorists and sent to private prisons and correctional facilities owned by corporations. To maintain their control, the upper class launches Project Island (sending prisoners to a prison island) at the global broadcasting company TEC1 as a measure to suppress rebellions. Their lives are broadcast worldwide as a TV show called "The Island," and the upper class enjoys watching. (Players are occasionally filmed by drone cameras.) With most of the prisoners dying within the first 24 hours, the game allows players to experience how long they can survive by escaping difficult situations and winning kills, with the ultimate goal being to escape the island.
