Whether your selling your computer, recycling your computer or giving the computer away, you need to wipe and erase all the data on that hard drive first. Simply formatting the hard drive or SSD will not remove the data from that hard drive. All data can be recovered using data recovery software. This could be sensitive data like banking details, photos, videos, emails and documents or any other data that you don't want other people to have.

Redkey is a simple way to remove and erase data on any hard drive permanently so it can't be recovered. This is done by using a overwriting method like

DoD 5220.22-M

Data is overwritten by a random number, then by its complement, then by another random number, and is then verified.

BSI/VSITR

Data is overwritten 7 times with the following patterns: 0x00, 0xFF, 0x00, 0xFF, 0x00, 0xFF, 0xAA.

GUT - Peter Gutmann's Algorithm
This standard erases the data by writing a series of 35 patterns over the region to be erased.

SCH - Bruce Schneier’s Algorithm
The first pass overwrites the drive with the bit pattern 11, the second pass with 00, and the next five with a randomly generated bit pattern.

It's sometimes written as Pfitzner 33-pass, Pfitzner 7-pass, random(x33) or random(x7).
