So, before we started all the online PS3 Daytona USA a weekend or so back, we played a bit of Sega Rally Online Arcade. Unlike the full Daytona lobbies, this was just me and 2 friends from Facebook, no one else heeded my call to join us for this game. We decided in this game it'd be amusing if we all chose the Enduro Racer car and all decided to go for AT transmission instead of manual.

Now, the thing is right, I do really like this game and I had a lot fun back when I very first got it and was unlocking all the bonus cars, buuuuut, and this is a big but - it's definitely nowhere near as good fun as Daytona USA in multiplayer. The missing magic ingredient here is the slow car boost you get in Daytona - If you're not familiar with the slow car boost, it basically gives every car in multiplayer that's not in first place a speed boost, so that everyone can keep catching the lead player up. That's why the races in Daytona are always so dynamic and exciting, because you don't get one player that gets out in the lead and just stays there (well, unless the other players are absolutely shit at the game). I think most Sega AM2 racers supported this function back in the day (no idea about the original Sega Rally though as that was an AM3 game, although I have played it in multiplayer using linked versions of Model 2 Emulator and all the races seemed pretty neck-and-neck between me and my mates who weren't familiar with the game).

When you play SROA in multiplayer, you don't get that slow car boost. This mean you might be a fraction of a second slower than one of the other players getting off the starting grid and then, if they don't mess up and you don't mess up, you just stay that fraction of a second behind them the entire race. It definitely makes the races seem a lot less fun than Daytona's.

Oh, and another minor quibble about the game - why aren't the Celica and the Lancia available to use in the multiplayer? In fact why aren't they selectable (outside of the Time Attack mode) in anything other than the Classics race? If they're not as good stats-wise as the more modern cars, I'm sure that could be easily tweaked.
