So, I finally was able to answer the question this afternoon, is it still possible to play an online game of Outrun Online Arcade on the PS3? And the answer is a resounding yes!

When I put out my video to organise some games of Daytona USA, I also shared it on a Sega related Facebook group, as at least one person there had previously expressed interest in playing some games, and in fact two of the guys from that group feature in some of the Daytona videos I’ve uploaded/am in the process of uploading. When I was chatting to them about it afterwards on the FB page, it turned out one of the guys, ShibuyaVic, also owned Outrun Online Arcade on the PS3, something I’ve been dying to try and play online again for aaaaages.

I only ever got to play it a few times online when it very first got released, and I suspect it’s probably been about 9 to 10 years since I last took part in an online game. Even back then, I don’t think I ever got involved in a game with more than 3 other people.

I'm really chuffed you can still get online with this. The couple of times I'd played online back when the game very first came out, I'd had issues where parts of the track would disappear at the crossroads and you'd spend about 20 seconds crashing into an invisible barrier, so I was glad we had no internet related issues. ShibuyaVic turned out to be a bit of an Outrun 2 ninja, he beat me a hell of a lot more in all the games we played than I beat him, although they were INCREDIBLY neck-and-neck the whole way through.

This wasn’t helped by the fact that when we first started playing, I was having controller issues. I was experimenting with using a PS4 Dualshock 4 on my PS3 for the first time (because it's got nicer shoulder buttons for driving games than the DS3 pad) but it kept losing connection and this really annoying message kept popping up on screen asking me to 'resume game' and I'd lose speed or crash whilst I was trying to get rid of it - I think the pad kept losing connection on account of the crap top USB ports DS4's have got (I was just using it as a plug n play wired pad rather than properly Bluetooth paring it). Eventually, after it kept happening for about the first four games, I just changed back to a regular DS3 and that solved the problem.

If anybody else still has this for the PS3 and wants to take part in an online game, let me know in the comments. I'll put out an announcement on my YouTube, like I did for the Daytona, at some point and see if we can get a full lobby on the go.
