That is....unexpected.

Sure would like to see the lore explanations to wtf just happened here. Not what I expected after stabbing out its eye and plunging a sword through its head.

EDIT: After some thought, this is what I took away from this.

It's known that ancient people of Ashina worshiped the serpents as gods, and would ritualistically offer themselves as "brides" (palanquin in outskirts). I think most of us interpreted that as feeding the snake, but now I don't think that's true.

Think about the dried viscera cave and it's surroundings. It's a toxic swamp inhabited almost entirely by monkeys, besides the memorial mob. I need to recheck his dialogue later, but I think in general it's implied they're memorials for humans, not monkeys. Also, the wall ghosts don't look like monkeys.

So, what if being a bridal offering is a bus service into that cave? The dried viscera is held in a shrine on an altar, clearly revered as a sacred holy artifact. One the people would've wanted to protect. I mean, all ghosts try to kill you in this game, but the rest were implied to be people you've killed on that playthrough. You've clearly never killed anyone resembling wall ghosts. Hence, I think they're actually the ancient serpent brides, who's duty was to nourish the cave serpent guarding the dried viscera, and then join it in its duties. This explains both them and the presence of the mob, and his familiarity with the serpent.

It also means the serpents aren't nearly as dumb and animalistic as they look, despite getting stabbed in that eye like that being pretty stupid.
