Description:

I decided to stop here first to see what would happen. The party wisely retreats because they still haven't recruited Haruki yet.
1:05 Desert
We meet Haruki, who wants to test us before we enter the desert.
2:38 Boss: Haruki
You can't win against him, but you get a cutscene afterwards where you can choose an angry or calm choice. Keep picking the calm one and lose two more times to him. Once the party acknowledges their limitations, they pass the test.
Note that as a playable character, Haruki's Reflection in the Water is single-target instead of AOE, which really sucks because we lack decent AOE moves.

Unfortunately, the game won't let us save in the desert, which sucks because we just made a moral choice in the previous event.
This place is full of illusions, but everyone except Haruki conveniently forgets this every two seconds. Hitoshima is doomed.

There are actually some hidden chests in the desert.

The good news is that the enemy party doesn't include a clone of Haruki, but the other three are still very dangerous. All your attacks will be converted to weaker AOE damage, ensuring that you can't kill one before the other.

Haruki used to be a swordsman, but he gained spiritual power in exchange for never being able to use physical attacks again. For some reason, you are given the moral choice to take his old sword, and doing so leads to the dark side, despite him giving permission. This moral choice just feels forced!

You can now remove the first barrier, but the second one will require you to explore the area. The enemies in this area don't drop a lot of money, so it's dangerous to mindlessly spam Haruki's crystal consuming skills, especially if you picked the wrong choice with the bandits and increased the cost of the crystals.
