Ouch, that wasn't a pleasant start. I could have restarted, but that felt like it would go against the spirit of the thing.
Aside from food feeling like it goes down significantly faster, it seems that mishaps are also significantly more common, from a higher rate of unexplained casualties, to instant diplomatic failure as your men panic, to ships wrecking themselves in shallow water.
Perhaps worst of all, native population centers that you haven't already visited seem to be invisible unless you have native guides with you, making resupplying in unfamiliar territory dramatically more challenging! One of the things I pretty much took for granted on Novice was stopping to trade for food just about anywhere, and not being able to do that is going to take some getting used to.
