“Welcome To The Sewers Punk!”

Sewer Shark for the Panasonic 3DO is a glorified / enhanced version of the SEGA CD / Mega-CD classic and remains a quirky (but memorable) FMV title that puts players in the cockpit of an up-and-coming “sewer jockey”. It’s a fairly straight-forward assignment, as you’re tasked with flying an almost derelict transport through the infested tunnels of a distant reality, eliminating anything in your path while blazing a trail to the elusive ’Solar City’ haven that awaits.

During your underground adventure, you’ll naturally encounter diverse personalities to keep company with. There’s the blustering (but always entertaining) co-pilot ‘Ghost’ - your comrade for the journey who provides frequent updates, witty guidance, and an array of peculiar “call signs” to award your character (aka Dogmeat, Ratbreath, Exterminator, and Beachbum). Furthermore, you’ll also get acquainted with a sultry female pilot by the name of ‘Falco‘, a grouchy curmudgeon boss ‘Stenchler‘, and a lively robotic friend ‘Catfish‘ who provides your traveling coordinates (“Three, Six, Niner, Twelve“).

At its core, this game is primarily a rail-shooter of sorts, which will have you blasting tube-steak and navigating the correct route through the maze-like sewers within. While the game-play mechanic undoubtedly has a somewhat repetitive quality that’s characteristic of most FMV titles from this period, it still manages to retain substantial replay-value nonetheless. All in all, Sewer Shark offers an unassailable charm that will leave you feeling nostalgic for more ratigator-exploding FMV-sewer skirmishes years down the road.
