Shadow Dancer, released by Sega in 1989, is an action-packed arcade game and a spin-off of Sega’s popular Shinobi series. Known for its tight, strategic gameplay and the unique companion mechanic, Shadow Dancer has players control a skilled ninja named Hayate (sometimes considered Joe Musashi’s son in the lore), who is accompanied by his trusty attack dog.

Shadow Dancer has a cult following and inspired sequels and ports, including the Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi on the Sega Genesis, which modified aspects of the arcade version to make it more console-friendly. Despite its difficulty, it’s celebrated for introducing the dog companion mechanic, which set it apart from other Shinobi games.

The game remains a classic in Sega’s arcade catalog, and it’s fondly remembered by fans of retro ninja action!
