I've always liked Natsume's games and their music (especially Ninja Warriors), so I decided to try this. I don't know how this compares to the original as I never played it, but it's kind of weird. Maybe depending on your expectations. It's sort of like Ninja Warriors as a stealth(?) platformer. Movement feels kinda clunky, but you're rewarded with pretty spritework and animation instead.
Anyway, it's okay. I stopped because I was feeling tired even though I had a nap earlier. I'll play more later. List of things that kinda bug me (note I didn't read the manual so maybe there are things I haven't figured out yet):
No step dodge or guard. Only step dash (no invuln).
It looks like a fast-paced game, but it's not. It almost feels more like a stealth game.
Sometimes it's kinda hard to tell what's a wall and what's not.
Sometimes it's kinda hard to tell what will damage you (by touching it).
Sometimes it's hard to tell what you should be attacking.
Controls could be less clunky if the game used a few more buttons.
It feels like grappling hook doesn't have much purpose. You can't use it to move around, and you can't use it to pick up items.
I feel like it might be a little more interesting with some kind of super attack.
The remake art style definitely isn't as good as the original Famicom's artwork, because I don't like the remake art's solid black shadows.
The remake chars look fatter than the original.
I feel like Natsume's music sounded better on SNES than with real instruments.
