1Shakira has responded to Spanish authorities, alleging she is the victim of a smear campaign and has documentation to prove it.
The singer filed court documents in Spain on Friday, responding to charges that she neglected to pay more than $14 million in taxes on income generated between 2012 and 2014.
Shakira claims she was not a resident of Spain at the time. She is compelled to pay taxes in the nation if she spends 183 days or more there in a single year, according to the country's regulations.
Prosecutors are seeking an 8-year prison sentence and a $24 million fine if she is found guilty in the upcoming trial, but she claims in new legal documents that she has already paid more than $90 million to Spain's version of Uncle Sam.
Shakira registered herself a tax resident of Spain in 2015, after relocating there with her family and enrolling her kid in school, according to the official documents.
Shakira alleges the government is also looking into her 2011 refusal to pay. She claims she was on a global tour and only spent 60 days in the nation.
She claims that prosecutors have breached her right to privacy and the assumption of innocent by putting her on trial in this manner. She refers to it as a smear campaign.
