Jack Black Finds Inner Beauty (and Gwyneth Paltrow) in "Shallow Hal"
Remember when Jack Black was the epitome of rom-com leading men? Okay, maybe not, but that's exactly what he was in the 2001 film "Shallow Hal." This hilarious comedy with a surprisingly sweet center tells the story of Hal Larson, a man obsessed with physical appearance. After a chance encounter with self-help guru Tony Robbins (played by himself!), Hal gets hypnotized to see only a person's inner beauty. Suddenly, the gorgeous women he used to chase turn…well, let's just say less conventionally attractive.
Enter Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow), the kind-hearted, plus-sized daughter of Hal's boss. To Hal, thanks to the hypnosis, Rosemary appears to be a stunning vision. As their relationship blossoms, Hal starts to question what true beauty really is. The Farrelly Brothers, known for their outrageous comedies like "There's Something About Mary," manage to pull off a heartwarming message about inner beauty wrapped in their signature brand of gross-out humor.
"Shallow Hal" isn't without its critics, but it's a fun watch with a great cast. Black is perfectly cast as the shallow Hal, and Paltrow shines (even if Hal can't actually see her that way). So, if you're looking for a rom-com with a twist, "Shallow Hal" might just be the perfect pick.
