Transforming Gwyneth Paltrow: The Costumes Behind Shallow Hal.
In the 2001 comedy "Shallow Hal," Jack Black's character undergoes hypnosis to see people's inner beauty. This leads him to fall for Rosemary, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, who appears overweight thanks to the magic of movie prosthetics and costuming.
Creating Rosemary's believable transformation required a multi-step approach. She donned a specially designed fat suit, crafted in sections for a natural look. The suit covered Paltrow from her calves to her mid-sternum, with separate pieces for her buttocks, thighs, and torso. To seamlessly blend with her natural features, foam latex appliances were applied to her upper body. The makeup team even added subtle coloring to further enhance the illusion of weight gain.
While a body double was used for close-up shots of Rosemary's arms and legs, Paltrow spent most of the filming time in the fat suit and prosthetics. This dedication, along with the impressive special effects, helped convey the movie's core message about looking beyond appearances.
