Written in 1713, Sheep May Safely Graze is sung by the soprano soloist as part of the cantata Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd, otherwise known as the hunting cantata. The work was written for the birthday celebration of the Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels and was performed after the party returned from a hunt on the evening of the dukes birthday.
In it's original form, the soprano weaves the beautiful melody around the lilting recorder duet setting the pastoral scene. But what if the animals themselves had centre stage? What may they be imagining as they are led through the fields? Perhaps they are hearing a different tune....
I hope you enjoy my prog rock take on one of Bach much loved pieces.
