Shin Megami Tensei - Synchronicity Prologue [真・女神転生 SYNCHRONICITY PROLOGUE] Game Sample - PC/Doujin
"Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue" is an interesting limited time free release officially published by Atlus and developed by Den-fami Nico Game Magazine’s "Ladybug" back in 2017 to commerate 25 years of the "Shin Megami Tensei" franchise. Released between the middle of October and the day before Christmas, the game has since been distributed by others online and has also received an unofficial (partial) English translation. It is a "Metroidvania" game that shares some similarities with "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night", though progression is quite linear compared to most titles in the sub-genre. It also uses elements of SMT such as characters/enemies, elemental/gun affinity, Macca as a currency, familiar abilities, Moon phases and a story that takes place during the events of "Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey". The game uses the "Mogura Engine", which titles by Krobon Station like "Pharaoh Rebirth(+)" and the various Mogura titles also used.
Jack Frost has synchronized with a human and, after rescuing the un-synced Jack o' Lantern, must stop the unsuccessful synchronization of Black Frost who is on a rampage defeating all in his path and turning others into evil demons as well. Jack Frost is faster, can negate ice attacks, freeze certain objects, put out fires and freeze enemies while Jack o' Lantern can float and reach places a little higher than Frost, negate fire attacks, light certain objects, melt ice and is a little stronger than Frost. The two of them can find skills along the way as well as key items, purchase items from Dwarf, and meet a few familiar faces along the way to reach a few different endings. Considering the game is a free promotional title, it's pretty nice overall; the graphics are fairly simple but presented well, the music is awesome, it controls fine for the most part (controlling Jack o' Lantern and his charged fireball attack is a little cumbersome, but manageable) and it's a decent diversion for a few hours.

It's kinda funny in a way because "Jack the Ripper" (Jack Skelton) was planned as a playable character but eventually cancelled. Had he emerged, the three Jacks could adventure again like they did way back on Nintendo's Virtual Boy with the release of "Jack Bros." (which was actually the first real exposure the West had to the Megami universe, before "Persona" or "Megami Ibunroku Persona"). Enjoy, and "Happy Halloween" to those who celebrate it!
