Shmups Pt 2 (Arcade and Home System Games in MAME Multisystem May Stream, 26 May 2021)
Back in May of 2015 the, at the time, arcade-only emulator “MAME” and the spin-off emulator that covered other systems “MESS” were folded down into their more natural form; a single, easier to maintain and easier to develop entity that would move forward with the established “MAME” name.
May of 2021 therefore represents the 6th anniversary of this decision, one which has allowed MAME to bloom as a project, and helped to drive forward a large amount of arcade, and non-arcade progress that would otherwise have not been possible.
As a result, MAME today supports a wide variety of arcade games, but is also capable of running games from a large number of other systems, including many popular (and plenty more less popular) home systems.
For these May streams I want to alternate between playing an arcade game, then playing a game for one of the home platforms. Some of these will be connected in some way, for example, ports, spin-offs or console exclusive sequels, while others will simply be games in a similar genre that I’ll be deciding if are worth checking out or not.
MAME’s emulation of some home systems is second to none, providing the best experience out there, while for other systems it’s still in a preliminary state. This is something I’ll keep in mind when choosing games to play.
