When the Elgato Stream Deck Pedal came out, people were immediately posting how they could get something cheaper that was "just as good". Arguments began as to how unfair, and how plain inaccurate that statement was.

So, what about the Elgato Prompter? Is it possible to bodge one yourself, out of cheaper individual parts? I don't think so. My curiosity - and perhaps my impatience - led to me trying to make my own robust teleprompter setup that met my needs, partly because I thought the Elgato Prompter was a lot further away than it actually was.

Did I enjoy the process? Partly. Did it frustrate me and take me months to put everything together? Definitely. Would it have cost me less to buy the proper Elgato one? In terms of raw parts, when I bought them, mine was cheaper, but there are significant ways in which it is nowhere near as robust or flexible. And I only managed it cheaper thanks to lucky timing and clearance sales, otherwise it'd actually have been more expensive.

Obviously, a lot of people couldn't have bought the Elgato Prompter. It didn't exist, back when we respectively decided we needed a teleprompter. But if I were to start now, from scratch, making that decision to try and build a semi-professional setup?
