26Is it time to cancel Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs? Is it appropriate to revisit Doc, Dopey, Sleepy, Bashful, Happy, Sneezy and Grumpy?
Actor Peter Dinklage recently made headlines after appearing on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast where he stated that Disney's live action remake of 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' was backwards in revisiting that "backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together".
Following Dinklage's statement, Disney issued an official response, followed by statements from other actors in the dwarfism community in opposition to Dinklage's statement which opened up discussions around representation for the dwarfism community in casting.
Dwarfism been the subject of ridicule and objectification throughout history, and continues to be a problem today such as Mini-Me in the Austin Powers films, the Shrek franchise, and more. And so today, we're looking at the history of dwarfism in folklore and how it has affected people in real life, including but not limited to 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs', in an effort to answer the question: Should the Seven Dwarfs be Cancelled?
