Police Quest II: The Vengeance is the sequel to Jim Walls's original police procedural graphical adventure game, continuing the story of detective Sonny Bonds, recently promoted from Vice to Homicide, when the drug kingpin he put away at the end of the previous game, Jessie Hiram Bains, escapes from custody on the day of his retrial, and leaves a swath of bodies in his wake while he makes a mad dash for freedom, with our hero hot on his trail.
PQII was a small departure from the style defined in the first of the series, in its much looser requirement on strict police procedure, in favor of a more natural point 'n click adventure feel with a focus on the collection of evidence and forensics of police work, instead of strict memorization and execution of obscure police procedures. It was released in November of 1988, one year after the publishing of its predecessor, "In Pursuit of the Death Angel". Graphically it was an improvement from the double-wide pixel technology of the AGI engine to the new Sierra SCI engine, and included a fantastic score by Mark Seibert on the Roland MT-32.
The NPCs are playing Police Quest on the GOG.com DOSbox version with Roland MT-32 audio.
Sierra Saturday is a weekly series on the Level 0 NPCs channel, where Matt & Luke relive their childhoods playing classic adventure games of the '80s and '90s (and beyond?). Sierra adventure games were a special breed of dark humor, brutally unfair puzzles and unforgettable characters, and we hope you enjoy this walk down memory lane with us.
