Signal explores a post-apocalyptic society from a rarely explored perspective - cold-war era Soviet Russia. The show depicts the aftermath of an apocalyptic event in the remains of 1960s Soviet Russia, the potential reaction of a Soviet government to such an event in the following decades, and a population that has their history hidden from them among a looming civil war. It centres around Yuliana, an elderly but active woman who has grown up in this post-apocalyptic society who acts as a Communicator - who handles the transmission of top-secret government secrets. She stumbles upon a undestroyed "pre-Calamity" codebook that leads her to numerous clues across the forgotten post-apocalyptic Russian landscape, and exploring the secrets of the Numbers Stations, which transmit mysterious coded messages pertaining to the cause of the apocalypse. The story is told through multiple timelines, depicting Yuliana's quest in the present day as well as the pre-Calamity political underbelly of the past.
