Signalis Part 1
This was completely unexpected. It felt like it came out of nowhere. What a cool game. It's kind of hard to place this game. It's survival horror with a heavy emphasis on puzzle solving. Sometimes it's just finding a key other times it's actually solving real puzzles like the correct frequency to get a number station that has a safe code. I love it. But the game also has a bit of stealth, you really don't need to engage enemies and since ammo is crazy scarce early on it seemed best to just avoid enemies. As long as you aren't running you can sneak by the patrolling Replikas. The top down view made me think Metal Gear. The graphical presentation certainly makes it stand out. It has a very strong Playstation vibe. It does a great job of mixing low-resolution polygons and pixels. It's unique and I loved it. the atmosphere is wonderful, albeit it can be very dark.Towards the end the game throws a ton of enemies at you, which feels a bit odd. To be fair you do have a pretty big arsenal at that point. The downside is that you can only carry 6 items. Inventory management is crucial and a pain. There are a ton of items lying around so I found myself constantly returning to the item box to drop stuff off. It does start to wear thin after a while. I think there should probably be so sort of way to manage key items separately or items like key cards not taking up multiple slots, it's a little silly. Heck, they could have given you a way to expand your carrying capacity as well. It's a small complaint in an otherwise great game. Like a lot of puzzle games there is a ton of wandering around wondering what you need to accomplish. Most of the time it's pretty straight forward, but there were a few times where I had no idea what I was working towards or what I had to do. The story is a bit of an artsy mess too. Sometimes people get to cute and are a little too vague about what is actually happening and this borders on the confusing for no real reason. It's not bad, but can be a bit hard to follow, especially where you are and what you are doing. It at times is very dream like and surreal and that is kind of the point I guess.. I liked this game and hope that there is more of this kind of stuff in the future. Enjoy my blind playthrough.
