In the town of Silent Hill, James Sunderland arrives after receiving a letter from his wife Mary Shepherd-Sunderland who had died three years prior due to a degenerative and incurable disease. The letter claims Mary is waiting for him in their "special place", which confuses James, as the whole town was their "special place". Despite wondering if the letter was really written by her, he sets out to look for her in the eponymous town.
