It was early August. 1983. The weather was still pretty hot outside. And one of Barbara Campbell's favorite things to do when it was hot, was to go to the mall to shop. She loved the coldness of the air conditioners while she browsed store to store, there was nothing quite like it. Barbara had quite an expensive collection of purses, earrings, necklaces, dresses, shoes, and hats back at home. But she oftentimes felt bored with life, and buying more clothing was the best way she knew how to spend the time.

Unfortunately, Barbara was not really a nice person. She was very self-centered and also quite vain. She seemed to care more about her shopping expeditions than anyone in the various shops who tried to be polite to her. Barbara's aura was just plain negative.. mean-spirited. The people who worked at the stores she went to did not like her, in fact some of them were genuinely afraid of her. Barbara on more than one occasion had brought down some of them to tears with her vicious attitude.

One of Barbara's favorite stores was a pricey boutique on the second floor of the mall. She would stop at the food court to buy a medium iced Diet Coke and sip it as she took the escalator to 2-F. This particular boutique had a window display featuring mannequins wearing all the latest fashion trends and swimsuits.

Barbara of course loved the mall, and most of the music they played over the high-fidelity speakers here and there, Guns & Roses seemed to get a lot of airplay lately. Barbara had never been to a live concert before, it seemed like a daunting prospect... On a different look, Barbara hated all the other shoppers and employees. She hated the noisy skateboard kids and the ticket sellers at the movie theater. And she hated the beggars in the tar-asphalt parking lot who asked her for any spare change. It seemed like she hated just about almost everyone...

'..What do you mean you don't have it in blue?!?' Barbara was furious with the teenage girl who was helping her at the shop, and as usual, demanded to speak to Cliff, the store manager. But when Cliff explained that the blue version of that dress was on back-order, Barbara got even madder. She continued yelling, and even cursing at Cliff who just stood there, not knowing what to do about it.. The owner of the boutique had told him to do everything possible to accomodate Barbara, because of all the money she spent there every month, sometimes thousands of dollars.

She soon seemed to lose interest in ranting and raving at Cliff, and in a rage began grabbing clothing items off the racks and a few necklaces too. She had them all rang up at the counter, when she felt that the cashier wasn't working fast enough she said something mean to him too. Then out the entrance she left, still cursing and ranting with arms full of shopping bags.

About five minutes later, Barbara had arrived back in the parking lot, her eyes trying to adjust to the bright summer sun. Seemingly by a bit of tinted bad luck, she was a few hundred feet from her car when another car, going many miles over the speed limit, came around the curve out of nowhere and hit Barbara with a terrible force. The white shop bags she had been holding went in every which way, some of them got splattered with bright red blood. One of the bags ended up next to a shiny ruby necklace she had just bought, it sparkled in the sun next to a paper bag spackled with blood. Poor Barbara had died instantly.

A year went by. Summer 1984. The mall was seemingly a much quieter place. Barbara was no longer a visitor to the mall, of course. And no one seemed to care that Barbara Campbell was gone. No one at all.

One Sunday evening, after the mall had closed for the day, Cliff the store manager of the Chi'c Boutique on the 2nd Floor, received a delivery. It was a large wooden box containing the new store mannequins. He spent the next two hours putting the models together, by the time he was done, everyone else had gone home for the night. A crescent moon loomed brightly in the night sky outside.

Cliff was tired. Arranging the front window display had been a lot of work, and now he wanted to go home like everyone else. But first he had to get a look at how the new display appeared from the other side.

He stepped back from the window and crossed his arms. There were the 3 mannequins, standing there in the latest August fashions. ...But there was something strange about the mannequin on the right. In the reflection of the moon, it looked almost alive. It looked like her. It looked *exactly* like her. It looked exactly like Barbara Campbell. Cliff was just about to start running for the escalator.. The mannequin reached its right arm toward him and smiled in an evil way. Cliff was so scared that he froze in his tracks, ..he felt a sharp pain in his heart.. Suddenly all the lights in the entire mall went out. Cliff screamed for his life, and----
