It was two o'clock at night in February. Peter Rothberg was in his bed on the second floor of the old house where he lived alone. Despite having two heavy blankets, it was very cold that night so he went downstairs to turn up the heat.

As Peter was on his way up to go back to bed, a little black dog ran past him down the stairs. Peter was so startled by the dog that he almost lost his balance. The dog got to the bottom of the stairs and disappeared into the darkness. 'What the hell? Where did *you* come from??' he exclaimed in disbelief. He had never seen the dog before.

Peter went down the stairs and turned on all the lights. He looked in every room on the first floor, but could not find the black dog anywhere. Starting to feel a little fearful, he went outside and brought in his two watchdogs that he kept in the backyard. The two dogs looked a little confused, but they acted as if they were the only dogs in the house.

The next night, again at two o'clock, Peter was awake in his bed. He heard what sounded like a small dog walking around in the attic above him. He ran upstairs and quickly turned on the light. He saw nothing but the dusty chairs and tables that he kept up there. Just to be sure, he looked in all the corners but still found nothing. 'This makes absolutely no sense,' he said out loud to himself.

Peter decided that there was nothing else he could do. He went back to his bedroom and tried to read a book, he wanted to take his mind off the dog. Was he hallucinating or was something really going on?? He couldn't concentrate on reading. Ten minutes later, he heard a dog running down the stairs. It was the little black dog, he was sure of it. He ran out of the room and tried to follow it, but again it had disappeared.

From then on, every night at 2am, Peter heard the dog walking around in the attic above him. And every time he went up to look for it, the dog was not there. After he left, he would always hear the dog run down the stairs. Then everything was quiet.

One night, Peter was able to convince his neighbor to wait with him for the dog. Just like always, the dog began walking around in the attic at two o'clock. Then they heard it walking down the stairs. The two men went out into the hall, and looked down the staircase. The black dog was at the bottom, looking up at them. 'Hey boy!' the neighbor called to the dog. The little dog wagged its tail, and slowly faded away into darkness until it was no longer there. 'I'm not doing this again,' the neighbor said to Peter with fear in his voice.

Two weeks later, Peter began to feel weary from the black dog's presence. He decided to bring his watchdogs into the house again. He had no idea what else to do. At two o'clock the dog began walking around the attic again, and Peter's dogs perked up their ears and ran to the bedroom door. Suddenly they bared their teeth and began snarling loudly. Then they backed away. Peter could not see the black dog or hear it, but he was sure that it had entered his room. His dogs barked and snapped at the air. They ran forward nervously and backed away again, Peter was white with fear.

Then one of the watchdogs yelped in pain. Its neck began bleeding, and it dropped to the floor from the bloody wound. A minute later it was dead. Peter's other dog backed away into a corner and whimpered lowly. Then everything was quiet.

The next night Peter brought his shotgun with him to his bedroom. He waited with it until two o'clock. Then he heard the black dog running down the stairs. He went out to the staircase and there it was at the bottom, looking up at him and wagging its tail. Peter lifted the gun and aimed it at the dog. The dog growled angrily at him, and then once again faded away into nothing.

That was the last time Peter ever saw the black dog. But the dog was not gone. Every now and then, always at two in the night, he heard it moving around in the attic above his room. Once, he heard it running down the stairs. He never managed to see the little black dog again. But he knew that it was there.
