⚠ ️ Why This Matters:
Schistosomiasis is a silent killer in rural Philippines, spread through contaminated water. Naujan Lake’s communities are at risk due to:
Infected carabao/cattle waste in water
Oncomelania hupensis quadrasi snails (parasite carriers)
Climate conditions accelerating outbreaks

Zoonotic Schistosomiasis in Naujan Lake, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines: The Role of Environment, Animals and Community Practices
Layman Abstract :
This study looked at how environmental factors and animals like carabaos help spread a disease called Schistosomiasis around Naujan Lake in Oriental Mindoro. The disease is caused by parasites that live in tiny snails and are passed through contaminated water and animal poop. Researchers checked animal waste, water quality, and snail sites in four towns. They found that areas with infected snails also had many cases of the disease, especially in Socorro and Pola. Carabaos were a major source of the parasite. The study also created a model to help predict where the disease might spread, based on water and air temperatures. The results highlight the need for regular monitoring, better local policies, and awareness campaigns to protect communities and stop the spread of the disease.
