Silent Steel (DVD) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
134A playthrough of Tsunami Games' 1999 FMV/interactive movie game for DVD players, Silent Steel.
Silent Steel originally came out in 1995. It came on four CDs, and there were two versions made: one was made for PCs equipped with a hardware MPEG decoder card, which was fairly exotic back in the day, and a version that could run without the dedicated hardware. The video quality was far higher in the MPEG version of course, but the standard one still looked about as good as full-screen 16-bit color video could being software-rendered on a 75mhz Pentium.
The DVD version was one of the early DVD-format game releases, and it's a good step above either of the 1995 versions. That's pretty obvious though - you can't really compare four CDs of MPEG1 video to a dual-layer DVD using MPEG2. It looks awesome - the picture is waaaaay cleaner, there's no random stuttering or shearing. The easy-cheese flows far more easily from the can now, if that's not too weird of an analogy. You know, the block-up being the bottleneck of a first-generation Pentium, as in the hard crusty bit in the processed cheese can nozzle?.... nevermind. Moving on.
Tbh I do miss the first stooge awkwardly looking at the camera to say things like, "Sir, insert disc three to continue. "

Silent Steel was a pretty cool "cinematic strategy adventure" (as it was billed on the packaging) that rehashes the same tropes that were already pretty well worn by the end of the Cold War (and the release of The Hunt for Red October). You are the CO of a boat cruising along in the Med that finds itself being stalked by both Libyan and Russian submarines. The game has been simplified a bit in shifting formats from the PC to DVD players (this one is somewhat less interactive than the CD versions are), but the sequence of events has been reshuffled, and makes for a more coherent, far more interesting movie this time.
It's not an easy disc to get a hold of, and I wouldn't really recommend paying a lot for it. I love the game in any form, but there's not much there that you can't get just from watching a video playthrough like this one.
